Drift Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how Drift (the “App”), published by Carbide Coding LLC (“Carbide Coding,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), handles information when you use it. Carbide Coding's general website privacy policy is at carbidecoding.com/privacy; this document covers the Drift app specifically.
The short version
We collect nothing about you. We store nothing about you on any server we control. There are no accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reports, no advertising, and no third-party tracking SDKs. Your settings, favorites, sound mixes, and any audio you import stay on your device. The only outside services involved are your app store (for purchases) and your device loading the app's font.
What Drift does
Drift is a white noise and sleep-sounds app. It generates noise (white, pink, brown, and more) on your device and plays natural ambiences such as rain, ocean, and wind. You can mix several sounds at once, set a sleep timer, play in the background with the screen locked, and optionally import your own audio files to use as sounds. All audio playback happens locally on your device.
Information we collect
We do not collect any personal information through the App. Specifically, Drift does not collect, log, or transmit:
- Your name, email, phone number, account credentials, or any other identifier
- Device identifiers (advertising ID, IMEI, MAC, serial number)
- Location data of any kind
- Usage analytics, session telemetry, feature-use tracking, or A/B-test instrumentation
- Crash reports, error reports, or diagnostic data
- Contacts, photos, microphone audio, camera content, or any other personal content
Information stored on your device
Drift keeps the following on your device only, so the app remembers your setup between sessions:
- Preferences — your last sound mix, favorites, default sleep-timer length, and similar settings (in the standard Android SharedPreferences area).
- Generated audio cache — the noise the app synthesizes, cached as files for smooth playback.
- Imported sounds — if you add your own audio, the file you choose is copied into the App's private storage and used only for playback inside Drift.
- Premium status — a local flag indicating whether your subscription is active.
These values live only on your device and are eligible for Android's standard Auto Backup, which means if you have Auto Backup enabled they may round-trip across device migrations through Google's backup service under your own Google account — we never see them. Uninstalling the App removes its local data.
Purchases
Drift offers an optional Premium subscription (weekly or annual). Purchases are processed entirely by the app store you installed Drift from — Google Play, or on iOS the Apple App Store. We never see or receive your payment or billing details. The App only learns whether your subscription is currently active, so it can unlock Premium features; that flag is stored on your device. Your purchase data is handled under the store's own privacy policy (Google · Apple).
Permissions Drift requests, and why
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS — required (Android 13+) to show the playback notification with controls while a sound is playing.
- FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_MEDIA_PLAYBACK — required so audio keeps playing while the app is in the background or the screen is off, with a notification you can see and stop at any time.
- WAKE_LOCK — keeps playback running with the screen off so your sound doesn't pause.
- File access — used only when you explicitly pick an audio file to import as a custom sound. Drift accesses just the file you choose; it does not scan or read other files on your device.
Drift does not request access to your microphone, camera, location, or contacts.
Third parties
Drift does not embed any advertising network, analytics provider, social-media login, or remote-configuration service. It uses your app store's standard services for distribution, in-app purchases, and the optional “rate this app” prompt (Google Play / Apple), which are governed by the store policies linked above. The App may also load its display font from Google's font service the first time it runs; this is handled by your device and sends no information that identifies you. Apart from your app store and that font request, Drift contacts no external servers — there are no servers operated by Carbide Coding involved in using the app.
Children
Drift is a general-audience app, is not directed at children under 13, and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because the App collects no personal information from anyone, this is not a concern in normal use.
Security
Because Drift collects nothing about you and stores nothing about you outside your own device, there is no central data store for an attacker to breach. Your on-device data is protected by your device's own security.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the effective date above. If a future version of Drift ever introduces any information collection, we will update this policy before the change ships in the App.
